The Foundations of the Astrological System

The foundations of the astrological system rest on the geocentric model, which is justified as follows: if a person stands on the earth and observes the sky, the earth appears as a fixed point while the planets, the moon, and the sun revolve around the globe. This process is called the apparent motion of the planets — a rather subjective model, since it is focused on the individual observer.

The heliocentric system (from the Greek Helios — the sun), by contrast, holds that the sun sits at the center of everything and all the other planets orbit around it. From this it follows that any person's birth chart is the stage of their life: the zodiacal houses are the scenery arranged on that stage, while the planets act as the actors, each playing its role through the aspects of their mutual interaction. This determines how the play will affect the person. Yet the director of the performance is always the person themselves.

An astrological birth chart can be analyzed on 5 different levels:

1. At the center of the chart's circle lies the person's higher “Self”; 2. The zodiac signs are innate expressions, behavior, and character; 3. The houses are growth through upbringing, a person's actions, and the influence of the surrounding environment; 4. The planets are expression through different types of energy; 5. The aspect structure — the nature of functioning and motivation.

The aspects of a birth chart bring it to life: they reveal the mutual interaction of planets or important points of the horoscope located in the zodiac signs, which in turn shows a person the path for their development. Since direct or exact aspects are relatively rare in a birth chart, the deviation in degrees from an exact aspect is called an orb in astrology.

There are several orb systems in astrology, and many astrologers choose between them very individually — some even create their own personal orb system. I use the following orbs for planetary conjunctions:

Aspects are tied to the specific way the energy of particular planets expresses itself, so it is important to understand the dynamics of how an aspect forms. Astrological aspects are the breath of the cosmogram: through their expression they act on a person's subconscious, which can guide them toward growth, purpose, and achievement.
