As the popularity of Tarot cards grows, many different Tarot decks are available today. But how do you choose the right Tarot deck? Which Tarot cards will suit me best? Everyone who decides to learn the art of reading Tarot cards faces these questions.

Choosing a Tarot deck is an individual and intimate process that everyone must go through on their own. There are many different Tarot decks available, from the classics to a wide range of modern ones. The order (numbering) of the Arcana may differ between decks, but the number of cards remains the same. A full deck consists of 78 cards, of which 22 are the Major Arcana and 56 are the Minor Arcana. Interpretations of the Arcana may differ between different Tarot schools.

To begin with, I would recommend choosing one of the classic decks, for example the Rider–Waite Tarot, because it has the largest amount of study materials, interpretations, and information available. Once you have mastered the Rider–Waite Tarot, you can choose another deck that you really like and find engaging. Choose the cards that speak to you the most — trust your intuition.

Rider–Waite Tarot

If you have an artist's talent, you can even draw your own Tarot deck, depicting on the cards exactly how you see and feel each of the Arcana. However, it is advisable to do this once you have studied the Tarot more deeply.

Another popular Tarot deck is the Tarot de Marseille. Its Minor Arcana have no illustrations, but its Major Arcana, like those of the Rider–Waite Tarot, are illustrated.

The Thoth Tarot deck of the famous magician and tarot reader Aleister Crowley has also gained worldwide popularity. However, this deck is best chosen once you are already more familiar with the Tarot Arcana in their classical sense. Universal Tarot cards

The universal Tarot cards include the already mentioned Rider–Waite Tarot. These cards can be used for predicting future scenarios, analyzing the current situation, and exploring past events. They can also be used in spreads on practically any question. Thanks to their universal application, these cards are also suitable for beginners. Classic Tarot cards

The classic cards include the already mentioned Rider–Waite cards, which are also universal. However, the classics also include more complex decks that do not fall into the universal category, such as the Tarot de Marseille and the Egyptian Tarot.

Light and dark Tarot cards

Light Tarot decks usually depict various characters (both "bad" and "good"). Light Tarot cards are universal and suitable for a wide range of spreads and questions. Dark Tarot decks, on the other hand, depict the negative, dark sides of the Arcana (usually showing demons on the cards). Dark Tarot cards are typically used to uncover negative, dark aspects and are mostly used by followers of black magic.

Today there are a great many Tarot decks created by different artists in a variety of styles. There are thoroughly modern decks depicting contemporary scenes, which can help you build a closer connection and stronger associations with present-day reality.

How to choose the Tarot deck that suits you best?

Choose the size and material

Tarot cards come in small, medium, and large sizes. Hold cards of different sizes in your hands to understand which ones are most comfortable for you. Choose a material and size that let you shuffle the cards easily and that feel pleasant to hold.

Pay attention to the symbolism

Different Tarot schools and different decks may feature different symbolism and illustrations. There are cards with narrative scenes and cards without pictures, bearing only symbols. Choose the ones you like best and find most understandable.

Research different decks and reviews online

Research which decks are available and what other people's reviews say. Compare how different decks differ from one another. Choose the deck that matches your goals and experience.
