Socionics and Tarot

Socionics is a teaching about 16 human types and the relationships (compatibility and incompatibility) between the types. Each of the 16 types has its own characteristic way of perceiving and transmitting information. The 16 types are also divided into 4 quadras; belonging to a quadra is defined by shared values. Each quadra contains 4 types. Each type possesses certain traits. Socionics has 4 pairs of traits: Introversion – Extraversion; Intuition – Sensing; Logic – Ethics; Rationality – Irrationality. Various versions exist that compare the tarot Kings, Queens, Knights, and Pages with the 16 socionics types — and one can certainly argue about them — but in this article I will lay out my own version.

I have been familiar with socionics for a dozen-plus years, and with tarot a bit less — about 8 years. Tarot cards, too, denote particular personality traits. So we can draw parallels and determine which tarot card corresponds to which socionics type.

For example, the Cups in tarot govern emotions and feelings; they describe emotional people. In socionics there is the trait pair of logic and ethics. Ethical types by no means implies that these people are ethical :))) — rather, it means that for people of these types, decision-making is ruled by emotions instead of reason.

Logical types, on the other hand, are governed by reason when making decisions. From this we can conclude that the Cups arcana in tarot will correspond to the ethical types in socionics. Swords in tarot are linked to thinking and the mind, so among the Swords we will “count” only the logical types.

The Pentacles arcana in tarot are connected with money and material values and are a down-to-earth suit. So the Pentacles will also hold logical types. I “placed” Jack, Gabin, Balzac, and Stirlitz in the suit of Pentacles because, according to socionics, these types have strong business logic. The suit of Pentacles, as we know, governs deals, money matters, and business.

For Jack and Stirlitz, business logic sits in the first channel of the psyche, and for Gabin and Balzac in the second. In socionics, as I mentioned earlier, there are also extraverts and introverts. If we look at the Kings, Queens, Knights, and Pages, the extraverts among them would be the Kings and Knights, while the Pages and Queens are the introverts. That is because the Kings in tarot are charismatic, extraverted, conspicuous characters.

The Queens, by contrast, spend more time alone in their castle and are not socially active, and the Pages — despite constantly being out in society — remain unnoticed and overlooked, which points to introversion.

Among the Pages I placed Dostoevsky, Balzac, Robespierre, and Yesenin, because these types, in my view, are less noticeable in society than the rest. Sensing in socionics describes people who live in the here and now; sensing types usually know how to present themselves visually better than intuitive types, and material values also matter to sensing types. The 8 sensing types of socionics will correspond to the Kings and Queens (tarot), who know how to present themselves.

Intuitives, in turn, are people gifted with intuition; their thoughts may dwell in the past or the future, and spiritual values matter more to them than status and material standing — so we will assign the Knights and Pages to the intuitives.
