Tarot and astrology are esoteric practices that partly overlap. They interact with each other through the four card suits — Cups, Pentacles, Swords and Wands — and the seven planets: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Each zodiac sign corresponds to one of the Major Arcana. In addition, every numbered Minor Arcana card (2–10) is influenced by one of three astrological modalities: 1) cardinal (initiating), 2) fixed (steady), 3) mutable (changeable, adaptable).

The elements

Each Tarot suit corresponds to an element, which in turn corresponds to certain zodiac signs: Cups are tied to the element of water, which means Cups correspond to Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces; Pentacles are the element of earth — the zodiac signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; Swords are air, and the corresponding zodiac signs for Swords are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; and Wands are fire, which means Wands correspond to Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

Zodiac signs corresponding to the Major Arcana

Each zodiac sign has a corresponding Major Arcana card, based on the qualities of the arcanum and the sign.

• Aries – The Emperor.
• Taurus – The Hierophant.
• Gemini – The Lovers.
• Cancer – The Chariot.
• Leo – Strength.
• Virgo – The Hermit.
• Libra – Justice.
• Scorpio – Death.
• Sagittarius – Temperance.
• Capricorn – The Devil.
• Aquarius – The Star.
• Pisces – The Moon.

Zodiac signs corresponding to the Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana cards of the Tarot are numbered 2–10, and each number corresponds to one of the three astrological modalities:

1. Cardinal (initiating) – cards 2, 3 and 4. Zodiac signs – Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn.
2. Fixed (steady) – cards 5, 6 and 7. Zodiac signs – Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius.
3. Mutable (changeable, adaptable) – cards 8, 9 and 10. Zodiac signs – Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces.

The Tarot Aces correspond to the number 1, which represents an element in its purest and most vivid expression: the Ace of Pentacles – the earth signs, the Ace of Cups – the water signs, the Ace of Swords – the air signs, and the Ace of Wands – the fire signs.
