XV: The Devil Tarot Card

General Meaning

Planet: Pluto

Zodiac signs: Scorpio, Capricorn

Planets in signs: Pluto in Libra, Venus in Libra

Element: Earth

A compromise with your own conscience, the tendency to give in to dangerous temptation. Obsession with power, material things, harmful desires, the dark sides of one's nature. Negative emotions, anger, destruction, misery, hardship. Dependence on other people's will or on circumstances.

The Devil is a negative card that serves as a warning to you. Stop indulging your weaknesses and negative character traits, otherwise you will have to pay for it. You may be unable to control carnal temptations. This can involve addictions to sex, drugs or gambling. The card may also point to a toxic relationship in which someone manipulates and enslaves you.

This person's influence can be so strong that it robs you of your free will and forces you to submit to their desires. It may happen that a dark past reminds you of itself, or that you come up against shameful information about yourself. The card shows that you are playing with fire, and this will lead to serious and dangerous consequences. A powerful passion may appear that grows into obsession and creates many problems and serious trouble. You will lose the last remnants of your conscience and cross the line.

The Devil Tarot Card in Different Tarot Decks

Meaning in Situations

You have the impression of being backed into a corner — and you have done it to yourself. Some passion of yours may be weighing you down. The appearance of the Devil card says you should stop and think: is your passion for money and sex not perhaps too strong? You should not use your position to manipulate other people or to satisfy your destructive passions. You believe that no one can help you anymore, and this belief prevents you from developing further and freeing yourself from your vices. You need to end all relationships that cause you problems. There are a great many different fears and negative thoughts in your life. You must learn to overcome them.

A card of vices from which no way out can be seen. Karmic attachment caused not by higher powers but by human limitation. A card of the love of life and of enjoying life and material pleasures. An ability or interest in sorcery or magic. A striving for higher truth, for revelation.

Work

Income (often a loan or promised income), or money on the side. Criminal business, a brothel, gambling halls. Success may be temporary, but right now everything is fine. Sexual intrigue at work.

Health

Health is being toyed with, but for now it is still good.

Relationships

Sex to the point of debauchery: so tired of the usual that any novelty is sought. May indicate a common-law marriage.

Personality Type

Sanguine types. They love to live with taste. They appreciate beautiful little things, refinements, aesthetics. Can be good cooks. Love hikes and travel. Orators. Love discussing big topics. Psychologists (they know exactly which strings to pull). Drawn to the mysterious: they often become esotericists, followers of some school of knowledge. A possible inclination toward homosexuality.

Advice and Warning

Pay more attention to the material side of life, its pleasures, sex. Warns that in the end the pleasure will have to be paid for. May indicate a risk of fraud (together with the reversed Hierophant, Moon or Fool).

Yes or No

Depends on the essence of the question: for material questions, “yes” — with a warning about free cheese. May indicate the trickiness of the situation, the unknown. The person takes wishful thinking for reality, or the question is not really about that at all.

Reversed Card Meaning

In the reversed position the Devil card takes on a positive interpretation. It points to a fearless person, free of addictions and outside influence. Such a person strives to overcome obstacles and to rid themselves of irritating, toxic illusions. They do not give in to their weaknesses and constantly work on self-development. But not everything is so smooth, for the Devil card has more negative qualities than positive ones. For example, the card may point to a person who is accustomed to manipulating others while creating a deceptive impression of themselves. The person lacks moral values, behaves indecisively and wields power arbitrarily. Perhaps you are tormented by the desire to taste some forbidden fruit.
